Student Award Winners

Fall 2011 Senior Awards

Brian Rapoport was awarded the Outstanding Finance Senior Award for Fall 2011.

Brian was an outstanding finance major at Eller College and achieved a 4.0 cumulative GPA, ranking first among almost 1,100 students. He also received the second-highest score on the Bloomberg Assessment Test (BAT) in 2011 and was the recipient of numerous awards, including the Financial Executives International (FEI)-McGladrey Academic Excellence Award in 2011. Brian is an avid investor and developed his own valuation model to manage his portfolio, yielding returns more than double the S&P 500. Prior to graduation, Brian held an internship in Product Review (Capital Markets) at Edward Jones in St. Louis, Missouri, where he was offered a full-time position following graduation.

Spring 2011 Senior Awards

Kathleen Roosa was awarded the Outstanding Finance Senior Award for Spring 2011.

Kathleen has accomplished many things as an student at Eller College, including achieving a 3.92 cumulative GPA while pursuing a double major in finance and creative writing. She has worked at Raytheon Missile Systems and for two literary companies in New York City. She has actively participated in Eller Elite, was the Philanthropy Chair of Eller Elite Phase II and the “Best in the West” event, and active in other community service activities. Kathleen plans to pursue her dual passions in an E-Commerce graduate program in New York City.

Michael Bernstein was awarded the Finance Department Head's Award for Academic Distinction for Spring 2011.

Michael has strong academic skills shown in his 4.0 cumulative GPA and his classroom success, finance scholarships, as well as strong career potential in investment banking. Following graduation, he joined Conix, Inc., a private equity firm in Tucson where he will head the analytical department for commercial operations.

Sara Pages and Alex Stutz were each awarded a $1,000 Fielding-Singh Award for 2010-11 finance seniors.

Sara completed a degree in finance with a 3.83 GPA. She is a CFA Level I candidate in June 2011 and received numerous scholarships while at Eller. She was a member of the Applied Investment Management Program, working on the energy and financials sector teams. Sara has several job offers in Arizona and plans to gain experience in large investment companies before starting her own portfolio management firm.

Alex was the FMA Student Chapter president for 2010-11, coordinated the chapter’s trip to visit Warren Buffett last fall and participated in the FMA leadership conference in New York City. He was a member of the healthcare and consumer discretionary teams in the Applied Investment Management Program. Alex has accepted a position with Honeywell in Scottsdale to enter their Graduate Rotation Program and eventually plans to pursue his MBA.

Fall 2010 Senior Awards

Stephen Long was awarded the Outstanding Finance Senior Award for Fall 2010.

Stephen was a finance major at Eller College and achieved a 3.92 cumulative GPA while working full time and co-founding a family-owned business. Stephen is a Marine Corps and Iraq War veteran. He was also the 2010 Edward Jones Portfolio Competition Winner. After graduation, Stephen continued his career with Raytheon and plans to attain a leadership position where he can develop others.

Spring 2010 Senior Awards

Chris Roberts was awarded the Outstanding Finance Senior Award for Spring 2010.

Chris has accomplished many things as an honors student and finance major at Eller College, including achieving a 4.0 cumulative GPA. He has actively participated in the student chapter of the Financial Management Association as Vice President of Finance and in Eller College as a High School Eller Recruitment Officer. Chris will be volunteering at Cambodia's Hope Orphanage in Phnom Penh, Cambodia for the next year. He eventually plans to obtain a JD/MBA and work in consulting.

Kathryn Holland was awarded the Finance Department Head's Award for Academic Distinction for Spring 2010.

Kathryn has strong academic skills shown in her 3.97 GPA, 4.0 major GPA and her classroom success. She has been active in Alpha Kappa Psi (professional business fraternity), including acting as the investment committee chair her senior year. Kathryn is entering the Master’s in Finance program at Eller College in Fall 2010 and plans to work in corporate finance after completing her degree. Long-term, she would like to pursue a Ph.D. in finance.

Perry Klauber and Torre Samuelson were each awarded a $1,000 Fielding-Singh Award for 2009-10 finance seniors.

Perry is completing a degree in finance with a 3.79 GPA. He is the FMA Student Chapter president for 2009-10, coordinated the chapter’s trip to visit Warren Buffett and was a finalist at the 2009 2 nd Annual Quiz Bowl of the Financial Management Association Conference. Perry plans to pursue his CFA designation and a career in investment banking.

Torre is also a finance major with a 3.81 GPA. She has been active in Eller Ambassadors and held positions as Vice President of Recruitment and Vice President of Finance. She was awarded 1st place in the UA Mattel Case Competition (2008). Torre is joining Raytheon in their rotational Finance Leadership Development Program and eventually plans to obtain an MBA.

Fall 2009 Senior Awards

Sean O'Neill was awarded the Outstanding Finance Senior Award for Fall 2009.

Sean is a finance major at Eller College and has achieved a 3.76 cumulative GPA and a 4.00 GPA in the major. While pursuing his degree, Sean has been active in sports, particularly baseball, and was a high school and university baseball camp instructor. Sean is planning to attend graduate school next fall and is considering an MBA or a JD at USC. While in graduate school, he will be a graduate assistant for the USC basketball team. Sean will represent the Finance Department and Eller College well as he continues his education.

Kevin Gray was awarded the Finance Department Head's Award for Academic Distinction for Fall 2009.

Kevin has strong academic skills shown in his 4.00 GPA as a finance major. He transferred to the UA from the University of Maine. While in Maine, he supervised games for the Children’s Miracle Network. He plans to pursue a CFA designation and is very interested in the regulatory environment surrounding the finance industry.

Spring 2009 Senior Awards

Katie Stuyvenberg was awarded the Outstanding Finance Senior Award for Spring 2009.

Katie has accomplished many things as an honors student and finance major at Eller College, including achieving a 3.88 cumulative GPA while pursuing a major in finance and a minor in Spanish. She has actively participated in the Eller College Student Council and was selected for Beta Gamma Sigma. She is the recipient of the Virginia & Mark H. Klafter Memorial Scholarship and the Wildcat Excellence Scholarship. Katie plans to obtain a master’s degree in a few years and will begin her career with GenSpring Family Offices, a wealth management firm in Phoenix.

Zachary Fenton was awarded the Finance Department Head's Award for Academic Distinction for Spring 2009.

Zachary (Zach) has strong academic skills shown in his 4.0 GPA and his classroom success, as well as demonstrated service to the community. He helped develop a golf and dinner fundraising event for the Brandi Fenton Memorial Park and has volunteered eleven consecutive years for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, in honor of his mother and godmother. His career goal is to focus on real estate development and business acquisition. Zach will begin his career with a private equity investment company in Beverly Hills.

Matthew Baum and Courtney Ellis were each awarded a $1,000 Fielding-Singh Award for 2008-09 finance seniors.

Matthew is completing a degree in finance with a 3.94 GPA and was a McCord Scholar. He is the recipient of a number of awards, including the Tucson Alumni Club Scholarship, the Wildcat Excellence Scholarship and selection to Beta Gamma Sigma. He was the FMA Student Chapter president for 2008-09 and volunteered with Support for International Change, teaching HIV/AIDs education in rural Africa. Matt plans to pursue his CFA designation and to pursue a career in the investment industry.

Courtney is also a finance major with a 3.83 GPA and recipient of numerous scholarships including the Martha Jane Garrett Kemble Memorial Scholarship, the Eller College Leland B. Groezinger Jr. Scholarship, and the Alpha Phi Fraternity Maxine English Scholarship. She was a founding member of Eller ELITE Program and Vice President of Finance on the Eller Leadership Board. Courtney is joining IBM Global Business Services in July as a Financial Management Consultant based out of Boston, Massachusetts.

Fall 2008 Senior Awards

David Duffield was awarded the Outstanding Finance Senior Award for Fall 2008.

David has accomplished many things as a Finance major at Eller College, including achieving a 3.86 cumulative GPA and a 4.00 GPA in the major. While pursuing his degree, David has been active in the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserve, including training and deploying as a Navy SEAL. During this time, he also assisted in implementing a challenging physical conditioning program for NROTC students at UA. David will represent the Finance Department and Eller College well as he continues his career with the NROTC and deploys overseas.

Zachary Bohlender was awarded the Finance Department Head's Award for Academic Distinction for Fall 2008.

Zach has strong academic skills shown in his 3.87 GPA as a finance major, as well as demonstrated service to the community. He is the recipient of several awards, including the Irving E. Soboroff Award and Henry E. Dahlberg Scholarship for a Finance major undergraduate. His career goal is to become an attorney specializing in corporate law.

Spring 2008 Senior Awards

Charlene Berglund was awarded the Outstanding Finance Senior Award for Spring 2008.

Charlene is completing a double major in Finance and Entrepreneurship and has accomplished many things at Eller College, including achieving a 4.0 cumulative GPA and acting as the corporate relations board member for the student chapter of the Financial Management Association (FMA) and as communication coach for business communications in 2007. She has actively participated in other student organizations such UofA Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), acting as Vice President of Competition, and in community activities such as Foundation for Animals at Risk (FAIR).

Charlene was the winner of numerous scholarships and awards, including the UofA Spirit of Discovery and Provost Academic Scholarships, the Intel Minority Business Scholarship, the Robbins Foundation/General Mortgage Scholarship and the Glen Strickler Scholarship. She held internships in finance at Apple Inc. and ON Semiconductor. Charlene will represent the Finance Department and Eller College well as she begins her career in the San Francisco Bay area after graduation.

David Platt was awarded the Finance Department Head's Award for Academic Distinction for Spring 2008.

David is completing a double major in Finance and Entrepreneurship with a 4.0 GPA. He is the recipient of several awards, including the George Gregson Scholarship for a Finance major undergraduate. David was the Treasurer and Alumni Chair of Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity and an active member of the student chapter of the Financial Management Association. He is preparing for the CFA Level 1 Exam and will be starting his career with Stifel Nicolaus & Co.-Baltimore in the analyst program.

Maxwell Burke was awarded the $2,000 Fielding-Singh Award for a 2007-08 finance senior.

Maxwell (Max) is completing a degree in finance with an International Business Certificate and a 3.8 GPA. He received several scholarships, including the Joseph and Mary Cacioppo Scholarship in Business and the Lovitt & Touche Leadership Scholarship Award. Max has served as the President of the Financial Management Association for the past two years. He was instrumental in organizing a question and answer luncheon and visit with Warren Buffet for a group of finance undergraduates in Fall 2007. After his graduation, Max will be joining Credit Suisse in New York City.

Fall 2007 Senior Award

Khuong Tran was awarded the Outstanding Finance Senior Award for Fall 2007.

Khuong is completing a degree in Finance and has accomplished many things at Eller College, including achieving a 4.0 GPA in his major courses and being truly engaged with his classes and the course material. Khuong has been an active representative of the department in volunteer work with Tucson Community Volunteers and the Arizona State Museum. Khuong has truly appreciated learning "how effective and efficient we can be if we know how to work together." He will represent the Finance Department and Eller College well as he begins his finance career as an investment banking analyst in Vietnam.

Spring 2007 Senior Awards

Ngoc Can was awarded the Outstanding Finance Senior Award for Spring 2007.

Ngoc is completing a dual degree in Finance and Accounting and has accomplished many things at Eller College, including achieving a 3.974 cumulative GPA, acting as teaching assistants for the business communications support lab and the undergraduate business math class as well as acting as a counselor for Credit-Wise Cats. She has actively participated in student associations such as the Eller Appropriation Board (Secretary) and Students Consulting for Non-Profit Organizations (Director of Education). Ngoc was the winner of numerous scholarships and awards, including the Gerald Bott Family Scholarship and the Financial Executives International - Arizona Chapter Scholarship for 2006.

Ngoc has been active in the finance department with volunteer research projects for Professors Helwege and Dyl and has held numerous internships in accounting and finance. Ngoc will represent the Finance Department and Eller College well as she begins her career as a Financial Analyst in the Corporate Finance Group of the Los Angeles office of Houlihan, Lokey, Howard & Zukin.

Brad Conrad was awarded the Finance Department Head's Award for Academic Distinction for Spring 2007.

Brad is completing a degree in Finance with an International Business Certificate and a 4.0 GPA. He is the recipient of several awards, including the Bott Family Scholarship for a Finance major undergraduate. Brad was the Vice President of International Business Student Organization, president of the Eller Pre-Professional Student Association, and active volunteer at the Tucson Community Food bank since fall 2003. Brad plans to return to Canada to work in portfolio management.

Joseph Peccolo was awarded the $2,000 Fielding-Singh Award for a 2006-7 finance senior.

Joseph (Joe) is completing a degree in finance with a 3.972 GPA. He received several scholarships, including the George Gregson Scholarship for a finance major and the CFA Level I exam scholarship for the June 2007 exam. After his graduation, Joe will be joining Edward Jones in the full-time rotational development program, starting in the equity traders group in Tempe, Arizona.

Fall 2006 Senior Awards

Kendall Prall was awarded the Outstanding Finance Senior Award for Fall 2006.

Kendall has accomplished many things as a finance major at Eller College, including achieving a 3.932 cumulative GPA and participating in the 2006 Emerging Leaders Conference Case Competition. Kendall has been an active representative of our top finance students in select internships such as the position with Edward Jones Investments in Tempe.

Kendall will represent the Finance Department and Eller College well as she begins her career. Eventually, she plans to join her family's companies, helping them to grow and expand.

Spring 2006 Senior Awards

Mark Stinner was awarded the Outstanding Finance Senior Award for Spring 2006.

Mark has accomplished many things as a Finance major at Eller College, including acting as a teaching assistant and head preceptor for first semester core finance courses, receiving the Henry Dahlberg Scholarship and actively participating in the Student FMA chapter. Mark was a student leader in the Applied Portfolio class and represented Eller College and the Finance Department at the Redefining Investment Strategy Education (R.I.S.E.) 2005 symposium in Dayton, Ohio last spring.

Mark will represent the Finance Department and Eller College well as he begins his career with Houlihan Investment in Los Angeles, California. He will be pursuing his CFA designation.

Lauren Foote and Alexander Masog were awarded the Finance Department Head's Award for Academic Distinction for Spring 2006.

Lauren Foote completed a dual degree in Finance and French and was the top student in her sections of the two 400-level core finance courses. Lauren was on Honors student and enjoyed tutoring the accounting course for finance majors. After working in industry, she plans to obtain an MBA degree.

Alexander Masog majored in Finance and was also the top student in his sections of the two 400-level core finance courses. Alexander was a first level honors recipient and plans to work toward a senior management position in corporate finance.

Fall 2005 Senior Award

David Hopkins was awarded the Outstanding Finance Senior Award for Fall 2005.

David has accomplished many things as a Finance major at Eller College, including achieving a 3.94 cumulative GPA. He held financial internships with Honeywell and The University of Arizona Financial Services Office while in the Finance undergraduate program.

One of David's significant contributions has been as a very active member of the Eller Board of Honor and Integrity, working effectively to promote ethics and integrity throughout the college. He has also been active in several leadership roles, as Vice President of Finance for the Delta Sigma Pi Professional Business Fraternity and as a participating member of both the Eller Student Council and the Arizona Bluechip Leadership Development Organization.

Spring 2005 Senior Awards

Elaine Bilby was awarded the Arizona Foundation Outstanding Senior for the Eller College and the Outstanding Finance Senior Award for Spring 2005.

She will be representing Eller College in the university-wide award process. Elaine majored in finance, with a minor in psychology.

In addition to building a strong academic career, Elaine is a big sister for a young woman through Big Brothers/Big Sisters. She is also a coordinator for the Eller College Early Outreach program working with 8th graders in an Amphi School District class. She and Eller College student mentors introduce students to business concepts and help to instill the interest and drive to finish high school and pursue a college degree.

Elaine is beginning her career with Honeywell Engines & Systems Corporate Headquarters in Phoenix. Her goal is to become a CFO for a large corporation.

Kyle O'Malley and Daniel Suh were awarded the Finance Department Head's Award for Academic Distinction for Spring 2005.

Kyle O'Malley majored in Finance and Entrepreneurship, with a minor in international business, graduating with Summa Cum Laude Distinction. He has been active in many Eller Student Organizations. Kyle will be starting his career with IBM Global Services based out of San Francisco, California and plans to return to school in an MBA program in the future.

Daniel Suh majored in Finance and Entrepreneurship, with a minor in Biochemistry, and has been a UA student senator and active in campus service honorary clubs. Daniel will be working for J.P. Morgan as an Equity Research Associate in Manhattan. His goal is to become a founding partner in an investment, research, or venture capital firm.

Fall 2004 Senior Awards

Eric Desai was awarded the Outstanding Finance Senior for Fall 2004.

He received a BSBA in Finance and Accounting, December 2004. Eric has accepted a position with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Chicago focusing on financial services clients. He enjoys knowing well rounded people, who know about the world around them, thus his interest in traveling the world.

During his studies at the Eller College, Eric also received the Eller College Highest Academic Distinction, Phi Kappa Phi Certificate of Merit, and the Virginia and Mark Klafter Scholarship.

Eric would advise students new to the Eller College and the Finance undergraduate program to make as many connections as possible with people, inside and outside the college, to show initiative and tenacity in searching for internships and jobs and, above all, to always be yourself.

Eduardo A. Silva-Ruiz was awarded the Finance Department Head's Award of Academic Distinction, Fall 2004.

He received a BSBA, Finance (with a minor in pre-law), December 2004, and plans to attend law school.

While at the Eller College, Eduardo was active in the Eller College Student Council, Beta Gamma Sigma Business Honorary, and Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law Fraternity. He appreciated the effort made at the Eller College to mold ethical and skillful business leaders for tomorrow.

Spring 2004 Senior Awards

Congratulations to Spring 2004 graduates Melinda Bair, Outstanding Senior in Finance, and Martine Duquette, recipient of the Finance Department Head's Award for Academic Distinction. Melinda is receiving her degree in Finance and Entrepreneurship and plans to attend law school. Following law school, she plans to practice elder and tax law in Phoenix, Arizona. Martine will be graduating with a BSBA-Finance and an International Business Certificate. While she plans to attend a graduate program in the future, she has accepted a job with the Vanguard Group in the Accelerated into Client Engagement Program in Scottsdale.
